I remember the first time I looked at myself in the mirror and said, “George, I love you.” My eyes watered instantly, and I burst into uncontrollable crying.
I had first read about ‘Mirror Work’ while pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Metaphysical Sciences and thought it would be a cute and fun exercise to add to my spiritual practice. Little did I know that it would turn out to be one of the most powerful healing practices I would ever engage in.
If you don’t believe me, go to the nearest mirror, look into your eyes, and genuinely express love to yourself. While you may not experience the same intense reaction I had, it will likely feel uncomfortable at least.
Louise Hay, a bestselling author and the woman who popularized Mirror Work, explained why this happens best. She said that when you say something to the mirror, it reflects back to you the whole truth about what you just said.
Therefore, when I said “I love you,” the mirror reflected back to me all the reasons why I didn’t love myself. There were so many that I became overwhelmed and started crying.
