It took me five years to publish my first book, Be the Guru.
I was 20 years old when I decided to start writing it, and over those five years, I must have rewritten the entire thing at least seven times.
Every time I finished it, I would go back and find a thousand things wrong with it.
I changed the title. I changed the subtitle. I reworked the chapters. I edited the stories. Then I edited them again.
I was trying to make it perfect.
Five years later, I finally realized something that changed everything:
I was never going to feel like it was perfect enough.
So, I had a choice. I could publish the imperfect book I had written, or I could spend the rest of my life trying to achieve the unachievable.
When I looked deeper, I realized my perfectionism was rooted in people-pleasing.
Growing up, I had learned to people-please as a way of finding the love and acceptance I desperately wanted. That pattern followed me into my writing. Somewhere inside me, I believed that if I could write a book everyone loved, I could protect myself from criticism, rejection, and getting hurt.
Of course, that’s impossible.
You cannot please everyone, so you might as well be yourself.
Eventually, I published the freaking book. 😂
Was it perfect? Absolutely not.
Did publishing it change the trajectory of my life? Absolutely yes.
That imperfect first book started a journey that led me to becoming a full-time author, writing more books, teaching around the world, and building the career I have today.
None of that could have happened if I’d kept waiting to feel ready.
That’s exactly what we’re talking about on this week’s Energy Work Podcast with Jon Prince, author of Start Before You’re Ready.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
• Why waiting until you feel “ready” can keep you stuck for years
• How perfectionism and people-pleasing fuel procrastination
• How to move through fear, self-doubt, and impostor syndrome
• Why confidence often comes after taking action
• How to stop overthinking and make more confident decisions
• How to take imperfect action toward the purpose you came here to fulfill
There may be something in your life right now that you keep telling yourself you’ll do when you’re more confident, prepared, healed, qualified, or ready.
Maybe you don’t need to become more ready.
Maybe you just need to start.
