If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll probably know that in 2017 I trained in and became a priest of Hellenic Polytheism, the indigenous religion of Greece. Since then, I’ve been a practicing priest at the first modern Temple of Zeus in Cyprus, and I have recently published my book Secrets of Greek Mysticism, all about the spirituality of the ancient Greeks.
Before this transition, my spiritual path took me in many wonderful directions. I grew up Orthodox Christian and left that religion at age 15, during which I studied and practiced various spiritual traditions. I explored Feng Shui, witchcraft, Buddhism, and trained in various energy healing modalities. If you were to put my spiritual beliefs in a box, you’d describe them as New Age.
Then again, when I eventually transitioned to the religion of my ancestors, I realized that many of the “New” Age beliefs I’d subscribed to weren’t actually that new. In fact, they were very, very old. So, I never saw a reason to reject these spiritual practices but instead merged them with my newfound Hellenic ones.
I’ve always loved the idea of finding commonalities between spiritual traditions. I wholeheartedly believe that the core of religions and spiritual traditions is the same (especially the indigenous ones), and when we acknowledge that, we can all live in harmony with one another.
Earlier this summer, during the summer solstice, I represented the indigenous Hellenic religion at the first Hellenic-Roman Association Conference ‘Mediterraneum’. This was a collaboration between the Greeks, Cypriots, and Romans, with the aim of strengthening our bonds and supporting the Hellenic and Roman indigenous religions.
Over three days, we practiced rituals together in various parts of Greece, gave talks on the topic of “the necessity of humanity’s return to ethnic religions and traditions,” and created opportunities for future collaboration.
At the conference, I met Kavit Shah, who represented the International Centre for Cultural Studies (ICCS). This is a global organization that brings together indigenous traditions. Every three years, they organize the International Conference and Gathering of Elders (how cool is that name?), during which the elders of the world’s indigenous religions come together to support each other.
My personal spiritual journey has been one of moving away from dogma and coming back to the natural, earth-based traditions of our ancestors. Hence, I’m passionate about amplifying indigenous voices and supporting earth-based religions.
In episode 161 of The Lit Up Lightworker Podcast, Kavit and I chat about the Athens conference, ICCS, and the rise of indigenous spiritual traditions.
